What to pack

Our favorite places to stay

At Aguas Claras, every bungalow and suite is its own little work of art tucked into lush jungle just steps from a quieter stretch of Caribbean sand. Think hammock-ready patios, open-air showers, craft cocktails at your toes-in-the-sand beach club, and a vibe that’s simultaneously chill and vibrant.

This stylish boutique spot blends modern minimalist design with jungle vibes and three dreamy pool areas — including beachfront looks that make your Instagram jealous. Steps from Playa Cocles, guests chill in crisp white rooms with tropical bursts of color, stretch out at daily yoga, and get pampered at the Bërë Bërë spa.

Our favorite places to eat

Breakfast and Lunch

  • Bread and Chocolate — it’s in the name. With homemade bagels and bread, they cost some of the best sandwiches in town. And don’t ignore the desert display! At least take some truffles with you to enjoy later.

  • Caribeans — located at the end of Playa Cocles, this cafe offers not only amazing chocolate made just a few hundred meters away at their chocolate farm, but also excellent house-roasted coffee and meals.

  • Cafe Rico — This rustic cafe that also serves as a used book store is a hidden diamond in the rough in downtown Puerto Viejo. If you have a big appetite, we recommend the Ana Rosa Especial.

  • Port Vell — Delicious cafe with vegan options in downtown Puerto Viejo.

Lunch and Dinner

  • Grow — a vegetarian restaurant right on the beach that even meat-eaters will be satisfied with. Perfect for sunset cocktails.

  • Cafe Viejo — classic Italian dining in the center of Puerto Viejo. Whether you’re craving fish, steak, or pasta, you will not regret your meal here.

  • Koki Beach — specializes in seafood with a tropical flair. We recommend not skipping desert here.

  • Pecora Nera — You can’t throw a stone without hitting a genuine Italian restaurant around here, but this one is the cream of the crop. Definitely the choice if you’re looking for an elevated dinner experience and excellent wine selection.
